Weekly Update 10/22/2013
Hello everyone! This week I found some information and exciting things in relation to my project. I was able to view current maps of Onteora Lake that are located in the display. They show topography of the area but they have little information on where the camping sites are located and detailed trail maps. It will be a great opportunity for myself to be able to provide these things through my project. This week I will be out in the field collecting data points of the trails and campgrounds with a GPS Unit. I am very excited to be out in the field and the progress that will be made on the project. Look forward to updating you soon!

The Bigger Proposal
Evan Leahy
GIS Project Proposal
Expanded
Introduction: For
my GIS course project I plan on mapping out the Onteora Lake waterbody in
upstate New York. The waterbody located in Kingston, NY, is maintained and
operated by the Department of Environmental Conservation. I believe in creating
this map we can give the public a valuable resource in helping them get the
most out of the area around the lake and its trails.
Methods: Onteora
Lake itself has a surface area of 16.5 acres and a shoreline of 1.3 miles. I
plan on going out to the lake and using a handheld GPS to collect a significant
number of data points at campsites and also along trails around the lake. I
intend on using ArcGIS software at Siena College to input the latitude and
longitude of these collected points into the program to create a map. In
addition, other layers that will be added include the waterbody itself,
surrounding roads, topography, and some landscape features. Using this
software, I will be able to show detailed features of Onteora Lake in an
interactive and helpful map.
Objectives: To
create a detailed map of Onteora Lake in Kingston, NY. My goal is to shows
different features of this lake that will be very beneficial for public use. My
hope is that it will aid in the publics understanding of the features of the
lake and also provide new detailed information to enhance their experience. I
hope it will make people more aware of local trails around the lake and
increase their participation in outdoor activities.

Mapping Onteora
Onteora Lake GIS Proposed Mapping Project
Onteora Lake is a small body of water in upstate New York that is owned and managed by the DEC. It provides locals with a great place to fish, kayak, and hike throughout the year. The surface area of the lake is 16.5 acres and the shoreline stretches about 1.3 miles.
For my GIS research project I would love the idea of mapping out a local preserve or hiking area around my hometown of Kingston NY. I think it would be a beneficial project in getting more local people informed and aware of trails that they could be using and enjoying. One specific area that I had in mind was the Onteora Lake Region in my city. It would be great to provide a GIS created map with trail identifications. I would be able to map out about a few trails that I have walked before. I this would be something I would really enjoy doing for my GIS project and a valuable resource for the public to use when they are hiking or visiting Onteora Lake.
