The Big Proposal

Evan Leahy

GIS Project Proposal

Introduction: For my GIS course project I plan on mapping out the Onteora Lake waterbody in upstate New York. The waterbody located in Kingston, NY, is maintained and operated by the Department of Environmental Conservation. I believe in creating this map we can give the public a valuable resource in helping them get the most out of the area around the lake and its trails.

Methods: Onteora Lake itself has a surface area of 16.5 acres and a shoreline of 1.3 miles. I plan on going out to the lake and using a handheld GPS to collect a significant number of data points at campsites and also along trails around the lake. I intend on using ArcGIS software at Siena College to input the latitude and longitude of these collected points into the program to create a map. Using this software, I will be able to show detailed features of Onteora Lake in an interactive and helpful map.

Objectives: To create a detailed map of Onteora Lake in Kingston, NY. My goal is to shows different features of this lake that will be very beneficial for public use. My hope is that it will aid in the publics understanding of the features of the lake and also provide new detailed information to enhance their experience. I hope it will make people more aware of local trails around the lake and increase their participation in outdoor activities.

  1. This is a great start, Evan. I have a few comments/suggestions:
*Don't forget to include the data sources you will use. What data layers beside the GPS points will you map. Will waterbodies, roads, topography, etc. be used to provide geographic context?
*For the deliverables, try to be a little more specific. Will the final map be color or black and white? What size will it be?
*For the schedule, include preparation of a draft map with available data layers before you head into the field.
